Echigo-chijimi is a textile made of fiber called “Aoso” collected from ramie (karamushi) of the Urticaceae. This group of materials consists mainly of spinning and weaving tools for Echigo-chijimi, known during the Edo period as a specialty of Tokamachi, along with specimens, materials, and documents concerning the customs and lives of women in rural areas who were ramie producers, as well as related documents.
In 1986, a total of 2,098 such materials were designated as important tangible folk cultural properties. In these archives, we present some of these materials, including 980 spinning and weaving tools and 171 sales tools.
